Overview
Waiting in the shadows, planning where they'll strike next, the mischievous Thieves are a force to reckon with. Swift and powerful, few can keep up with a Thief's attack speed and power, whether they're slashing their way in battle with a sharp dagger, or striking from afar with a bow. Striking them down isn't easy either, coupling their high flee with the ability to become invisible and poison their pursuers, Thieves have only magic to fear.
A Thief just wouldn't be a Thief if they weren't able to steal from their enemies, which makes them in turn quite adept at item gathering and money making. If the player decides to play as a Thief, frantic battles and high degrees of fun are guaranteed. They're also a very good choice as first characters, since in the beginning they don't have to rely as heavily on equipments to be able to fight consistently.
From job level 40 to 50, Thieves are given the choice to take the trial to join the mysterious order of the Assassins or continue plotting ever more daring crimes as a Rogue.

Quest Reward(s) | Jobchange to Thief |
1. Head off to the Pyramids, which is north-west of Morroc.
2. At the pyramid (58,159), enter, and head for the middle of the map to the Thief Guild (90,105).
3. Once inside, follow the hallway down and take the left gate (90,115). In here you will see two NPCs that will guide you through the quest.
4. Talk to the one closest to the portal. She will ask you a few questions, then instruct you to find an "Irrelevant Man" somewhere outside the Pyramid (141, 125) in order to steal mushrooms from a nearby mushroom farm.
5. At the farm, kill the mushrooms and collect the mushrooms that drop. Aggressive Fabres and Chonchons (and Spores, but they're not aggresive) protect the farm, so you may want to avoid them. Your mission is to collect at least mushrooms worth of 25 points.
Trunk Type | Point Value |
---|---|
Orange Gooey Mushroom | 1 Point |
Orange Net Mushroom | 3 Points |
- Note: If you die, you can talk to Mr. Irrelevant to return to the farm as many times as needed.
6. After collecting a sufficient amount of Mushrooms, head back to Thief Guild.
7. Talk to NPC farthest from the warp portal. He will count your mushrooms and if you have enough points, he will promote you to a Thief.

Leveling guide
To make sure your thief becomes fully functional, you’ve got to plan your build according to the 2nd class you’ll graduate. As a single target melee class however, it's recommended that you follow the standard leveling path mentioned in the New player guide.
Thief classes have these most common builds to evolve into:
Gank Rogue
Gank is a unique skill that can proc the Steal skill when you auto-attack a monster without consuming SP. You can basically get double loots from each monster you confront. This build is very popular among beginners, even more on Payon Stories where Rogues can learn Preserve.
- Pros : more loots means more money, relatively cheap to make, good mobber in static parties (especially at Stalactic Golem)
- Cons : not very good in non-static parties, no good aoe skill, low ceiling
Leveling as a thief aiming to be a gank Rogue :
Refer to the standard leveling path for melee classes. Thief has more flees thanks to the "Improve dodge" passive, thus can hit some of these spots a bit earlier than other classes. Around level 60s, you can try farming at Orc Ladies (outside Orc Dungeon, using Geffen Kafra Teleport Service) then Toy Factory 2, prioritizing Myst Case. You'll make your first steady income there.
In static parties, you'll be a mobber.
Skills attribution :
- Double Attack 10
- Improve Dodge 10
- Steal 10
- Hiding 10
- Cure Poison 1
The first two skills are your top priority for PvE efficiency. Steal 10 both increases the chance of manual steal and those of Gank later on. Hiding is a useful skill in delicate PvE situations. Although you can graduate to rogue from job 41 (or even 40), getting to job 45 to get the Cure Poison skill makes sense. If you're patient or joined an efficient static party, go for job 50 to get the sweet Gladius [3].
Stat distribution :
Raise DEX and AGI together until you reach 30-40 DEX, then focus on AGI. Around 50-60 AGI, start investing in STR (STR should always be lower than AGI, except if you aim for a build that also supports Backstab as a rogue).
Gears to aim for :
Like with every AGI melee classes, Pantie + Undershirt combo are the first pieces of armor you want to get. Damascus is the strongest NPC weapon you can buy, and that you should once you have enough money for it. At mid levels levels, you can farm Elder Willows, collecting Trunks to make your own Sakkat. At high enough levels, try farming your own Matyr's Leashes at Sphinx 2. Your first big investments will be to purchase an elemental damascus from a forger Blacksmith (usually Fire or Wind) for a much better damage output.
Dual dagger/Hybrid Katar Sin
Assassin is the state of art in terms of melee dps/flee balance. This build aims to use the unique ability of sins to wear double daggers for maximum dps, while still being able to use Grimtooth, an aoe that can only be used by wearing a Katar. On Payon Stories, Venom Splasher, has been buffed, which can also be used in lieu of Grimtooth.
- Pros : start cheap, can mob, highest dps on low defense monsters, good mobber in static parties (especially at Stalactic Golem), emperium breaker
- Cons : end up very expensive (carded upgraded gladius and main gauche, endow...), weak due to being melee, not very good in non-static parties, no sustain.
Leveling as a thief aiming to be a DD Sin :
Refer to the standard leveling path for melee classes. Thief has more flees thanks to the "Improve dodge" passive, thus can hit some of these spots a bit earlier than other classes. Check the "gears to aim for" section for more ideas.
In static parties, you'll be a mobber.
Skills attribution :
- Double Attack 10
- Improve Dodge 10
- Envenom X
- Steal X
- Hiding X
- Cure Poison 1
The first two skills are your top priority for PvE efficiency. The rest is up to your preference. Higher level of Hiding are better for Grimtooth, Envenom can be helpful to deplete HP more quickly, Steal can be a secondary source of revenues.
Stat distribution :
TBC
Gears to aim for :
See Gank rogue "gears to aim for". While an elemental damascus is useful, when preparing for sin, you should look for Jur[3], dropped by Martin at Coal Mines (incidentally a good farming place in your higher levels as a thief), and save to purchase an Infiltrator as well (about 200k in vending)
Critical Sin
